The Turkish curriculum is based on a thematic approach, and is structured in a manner to improve reading and writing achievement by helping students ascertain meaning from written material via textual, non-textual and intertextual reading. The structure and hierarchy of achievements from the first to fourth grade are arranged in a way to help students develop high level cognitive skills alongside basic language skills. Accordingly, the curriculum aims to;

• Develop listening/watching, talking, reading and writing skills of students,
• Enable them to use Turkish language in an accurate, deliberative and meticulous manner in line with grammar rules,
• Instill in students an enjoyment and awareness of language through the material they read, listen and watch, and in doing so, expand the scope of their emotions, ideas and imagination.
• Help students attain a love for and habit of literacy,
• Ensure students express their emotions and ideas on a particular subject in an effective and direct manner,
• Develop their capability to research, discover, interpret and conceptualize information,
• Develop their capability to access, organize, question, utilize and create information via written material and multimedia resources,
• Ensure that students approach any information with a critical and inquisitive eye,
• Instill in them national, spiritual, ethical, cultural and social values,
• Help them embrace aesthetic and artistic values through exposure to Turkish and world culture and arts.
